Alves was born Rodrigo Alves on 30 July 1983 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, to a Brazilian mother and a British father. [4] Her father, Roserval Alves, hailed from an ethnically Portuguese family who arrived in Brazil in the late 1940s. At first, the family were involved in farming however they expanded their involvement in business to include shopping centres and real estate. When she was 5 years old, at the time her grandfather gifted his daughter Barbie dolls. However, even though Alves was identified as a male at birth, from "the aged of and four, five, six" she believed she was have a female gender, and she had dolls, and was cross-dressed. [6][7] Her belief is that gender shouldn't define individuals. [8] She was shy and was bullied in her childhood. Alves had to endure bullying as a teenager because she had hormone imbalance. Insufficient estrogen causes breast tissue growth. Alves' family owns numerous Brazilian food stores, and has made them rich. However, Alves is yet to make any profits related to the stores in 2018. Alves moved to London at the age of 18 she studied public relations in London's London College of Communication. Alves receives money from her maternal grandparents.
